What Is The Best Season To Travel In?

Published July 8, 2019

Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall – Which do you like best of all?

If you like to travel, then you probably have a favorite season or month to travel in. And, you’ve probably had a debate with a friend or family member about it – defending your opinion and building your own argument. Am I right?

The truth is, when the best season to travel in depends on multiple different factors.

Before you decide that any one season is best – consider a few factors:

Where are you going?

While I agree that Florida offers a lot of fun for vacations, I can’t say I’d enjoy going in the heat of summer. People tend to choose places based on what kind of weather is there – maybe Washington is too snowy in the winter for some travelers, but makes a great summer trip.

What kinds of activities do you enjoy doing while traveling?

When you’re traveling, do you enjoy the outdoors? If you love to do things such as hike, swim, kayak, etc. – then summer may be your answer to the best season to travel in. If you enjoy activities like skiing, snowboarding, ice fishing, etc. – then winter might be the best season for you to travel in.

Does your job/career play a part in which season you travel in?

Growing up with a mom who had the same ‘summer vacation’ break as the kids, we tended to go places a lot in the summer. Being off work/on school vacation already makes planning a lot easier.

What Is The Best Season to Travel In

What are the perks of traveling in each season?

Spring

Right before the onset of the busy summer season, Spring offers colorful flora and fauna, smaller crowds, and pleasant temperatures. A disadvantage can be finicky weather – in areas such as the NW, Midwest, and NE, Spring can start as late as May. You may travel somewhere that is experiencing a cool Spring, or unseasonably warm Spring.

Fall / Autumn

Personally, my favorite season to travel in. Weather is cooling down, but it’s not too cold to stop exploring outdoors. Spectacular Autumn colors make road trips basically anywhere from Northwest to Northeast incredible, and crowds are smaller due to school being back in session. A disadvantage to traveling in the Fall could be early winters, as it often happens that Fall is the shortest season.

Summer

School’s out! It seems it’s the most popular go-to season for travel. There are certainly more options open – all National Parks are open to motorists. There are also more opportunities for outdoor adventures, like camping, hiking, swimming, etc. Crowds can be a disadvantage of traveling during summer.

Winter

As Winter can bring refreshingly cool weather to Southern states, it’s a great time to visit the Southeast and Southwest. In the North, it brings anywhere from cold to frigid temperatures – and snow! Great for skiing, snowboarding, ice fishing, etc.. However, there may be less options open for road trips, especially in regards to National Parks in the Northern regions of the United States.

Whenever you decide to travel, make sure to have fun!

Having fun is always the key to a successful vacation (or trip). Make sure to research places to travel that fit the season you’re traveling in; activities available, what the weather is like there, what the busy season is, etc.. Have fun, and safe travels!
